V COLLECTION JULY 2016 ARTIST: TRAVIS TAYLOR
JUL 1, 2016
On Friday May 6th, 2016 V Collection will be hosting local artist Travis Taylor. Travis is a photographer who holds a PHD in medical microbiology and immunology and is currently working at the University of Toledo researching the Zika virus. We sat down and discussed art, music and Texas Barbeque. Here's a peek into the conversation...
Jonathan: Thank you for exhibiting your latest work at V Collection this July.
Travis: Thanks for having me.
Jonathan: How long have you been making art?
Travis: I bought my first “serious” camera in 2004, but have been playing with photography for two decades.
Jonathan: What was the catalyst for artistic photography?
Travis: When my daughter was born, I decided I had to document the journey in the coolest way possible.
Jonathan: What inspires your work?
Travis: Cliché as it sounds, I am inspired by everything around me. Sometimes I stop in mid-conversation to capture something that catches my eye, a rock positioned a certain way, a chair creating a shadow… ordinary things I think a lot of people miss.
Jonathan: Who are your favorite artists and why?
Travis: Ansel Adams inspires my love for landscape photography. I have one of his prints hanging in my office, and it drives my need to keep getting out and taking pictures.
Jonathan: If you aren’t doing art, what are you doing?
Travis: I do my day job as a research professor when I am not doing art, though I squeeze it in there too. Art and science mesh beautifully.
Jonathan: What is the funniest situation you've ever been involved?
Travis: When I worked at Rocky Mountain Labs in Montana, a BSL4 lab (think Outbreak or Contagion and protective space suits) I was asked to film a choreographed full length parody of “Saturday Night Fever” titled “Saturday Night Hemorrhagic Fever.” Nerdy science humor, lab rats passing time. Me being “the camera guy” has often gotten me roped into ridiculous schemes.
Jonathan: What was the last movie you saw?
Travis: The Hateful Eight.
Jonathan: Who are your favorite authors?
Travis: Stephen King, Chuck Palahniuk, Dan Simmons, Patrick McManus, HP Lovecraft, JD MacDonald.
Jonathan: If you could only have 5 records for eternity, what would that be?
Travis: 1. Gin Wigmore “Gravel and Wine” 2. Smashing Pumpkins “Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness” 3. Of Monsters and Men, “My Head is an Animal” 4. Pink Floyd “The Endless River” 5. Linkin Park “Meteora”
Jonathan: What would your last meal be?
Travis: Texas style barbecue – brisket, collard greens, and a Shiner Bock.
Jonathan: What is your favorite leisure activity?
Travis: Photography, bug collecting, scotch tasting, rock polishing, fly tying, and other nerdly pursuits.
Jonathan: Thank you so much for sitting down with us and debuting your work at the Sylvania July Art Walk.
Travis: Thanks again for having me.
Travis will be live at the art walk on Friday July 1st from 5pm until 8pm. All of his prints are for sale. Make sure to stop in and say hello!
